My Friend a Conservative

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

I simply can't resist.

Only a few moments ago a friend of mine sent me an instant message to discuss someone from the media he looks up to, Glenn Beck. I haven't had an opportunity to judge for myself, but Glenn doesn't seem like the angry, hateful right wing republican that sometimes seems so prevalent in the media today.

My friend is a homosexual "conservative." He makes a distinction between conservatives and republicans, which I understand in today's political atmosphere.

Our most recent conversation is too good to not post anonymous. There's a chance he finds this and stops talking to me, and to that I can only point out, it's anonymous. This is what he believes, so...

MyFriend:hey
Leandro:hey
MyFriend:from glenn beck this morning:
MyFriend:"Could we get some nonscumbag Republicans in office? Is that possible? Is that possible? I'm sorry. Alleged scumbags."
MyFriend:he was referring to the senator who got caught in the toilet soliciting a cop
Leandro:The same one that was trash talking Clinton for having a private moment in a private location.
Leandro:The hypocrasy of the Republicans is vomit enducing.
MyFriend:so u see that glenn gives them equal heat
MyFriend:that's my point
Leandro:Admirable.
Leandro:What is Glenn's opinion of homosexuals in general, and then equality for all citizens meaning federal rights to homosexuals.
Leandro:Discrimination.
MyFriend:hang on
MyFriend:sec
MyFriend:i thought i had told u what his position was...he's very balanced and fair as i see it....today he was talking about it on his show and basically he was saying "nobody cares if he's gay or not....nobody should care about a person's sexual orientation as long as they r good members of society"
MyFriend:that's in a nutshell...i can't summarize the one hour he spoke about the whole thing
MyFriend:but you can read his opinion about this particular scandal here:
MyFriend:http://www.glennbeck.com/news/08282007a.shtml
Leandro:I understand that.
Leandro:That shows that he doesn't believe people should care, but does he as a person think that society should have equal rights ?
MyFriend:yes, but not marriage as society has seen it for a thousand years....equal rights, yes.....we had this discussion before, so please don't start with the whole marriage thing again....you believe in one thing, others do not....it's a no solution subject just like abortion
Leandro:I'm just wondering if he believe in equal rights for homosexuals.
Leandro:apparently he doens't
Leandro:Just trying to get a feel for him and his opinions.
MyFriend:that depends on ur definition of equal rights...which is the activist view
Leandro:I didn't know there was another definition for the world equal or the word rights.
Leandro:If I can't do what my dad can do, then we are not equal.
MyFriend:there are many gays who don't share the marriage crusade of other gays
Leandro:Its a very simple concept.
MyFriend:like i said, u see it differently
Leandro:Let me ask you two simple question. Do you believe equailty is an important social factor?
MyFriend:unfortunately every time an issue is discussed with gays, the issue of marriage has to come up, which makes people not want to discuss it, because marriage is the ever so live-or-die accomplishment of that crusade....and u don't realize how much that stops the dialogue of so many other matters....it has become an obsession
MyFriend:a very time consuming one
Leandro:Do you believe equailty is an important social factor?
Leandro:It is something worth fighting for?
MyFriend:i don't believe humans will ever be all equal, no
MyFriend:it's not in human nature
Leandro:I'll take that as a no, equality is not an imporant social factor.
Leandro:which answers my second question
MyFriend:i wrote no
MyFriend:and it's not worth becoming obsessed with it, to the extremism point
Leandro:And gives me insite into your Conservative mind. Which happens to be anti-progress from a social equality topic.
MyFriend:while it may be a nice dream, it's unachievable
Leandro:pessimistic
MyFriend:the "progressive" movement as u know it is liberalism in disguise
Leandro:progress MyFriend?
Leandro:You've made progress in your life through hard work and getting your papers.
MyFriend:two different things
MyFriend:not the same
Leandro:A progressive is a person who fights for progress with an optomistic outlook on what can be with hard work.
MyFriend:i'm a realist
MyFriend:not someone living in a cloud
Leandro:On the topic of equality, you seem to take a pessimistic approach, leaving many humans behind.
MyFriend:hard work? u mean the one that will pay for those in society who don't want to work?
Leandro:Not a very compassionaite stance.
Leandro:Thats a different topic.
MyFriend:it's not, compassion can only be given for so long
Leandro:Equality and socialism are topics that have no overlap.
MyFriend:yes they do....socialism promotes equality
Leandro:The approach you're displaying would of kept blacks in slavery.
MyFriend:in socialism u have to give to others so they can be more equal to you
MyFriend:of course u would bring up slavery...that's the "marriage" word for blacks
Leandro:Salvery is just another form of in-equality. It is a more extreme form, but a form nevertheless.
MyFriend:ok
Leandro:I'm bringing it up because it fits the bill.
MyFriend:i gtg
Leandro:no hard feelings. :)

Christian Boot Camp

Wednesday, August 22, 2007

Ah, another Christian horror story.

Charles Flowers, a pastor and director of Love Demonstrated Ministries Christian Boot Camp, is charged with second-degree assault.

So why do I report on this terrible Camp Story? Simple, they are a "Christian" boot camp. The moment you use that term and all its associations, the irony and hipocracy strikes much louder.

Don't get me wrong, this could of happened to any other group, including a secular or even atheist group, but the irony and hipocracy wouldn't be the same. That's all.

Islam in Europe

Tuesday, August 21, 2007

Another great video from Pat Condell regarding Islam in Europe.

I didn't realize that the Europeans are having so much trouble with religious politics. It sounds like some areas are worse than the US. I know a few Europeans that are freethinkers but think I am an extremist for considering myself an atheist. Lets see how things play out when religious oppression comes knocking at their door.

Light Pollution

I read the most interesting article that is really the push I need to buying a telescope. I'm officially going to start looking!

According to this article back in the day, Galileo was able, with his child strength telescope, to discover that the moon has mountains and Jupiter has moons, and that the Milky Way is made of individual stars rather than a single continuous substance.

On a dark night, the Milky Way actually casts a shadow! That's crazy!

Enterprise NX-01

Saturday, August 04, 2007

So... I'm a big Star Trek fan, so much so I'm going to the main Star Trek convention in Las Vegas next week with my partner Nilson and my friend Antonio.

So I'm in the middle of Season two of Star Trek Enterprise and Nilson and I had a disagreement on how many decks the Enterprise NX-01 has. Nilson says it must have 11 based on turbo lift movement.

I say it has 6 or 7 based on the size of the ship from exterior pictures.

In looking in the more authoritative internet, we found it has 7 decks including the bridge. I was right!!! :)

In the process I found the coolest website Enterprise NX-01 Deck Plans
